In API 6D ball valves, DBB (Double Block & Bleed) and DIB (Double Isolation & Bleed) are often confused.
The key is the seat design:
SPE – Single Piston Effect
Pressure energizes the seat from one direction
Self-relieving: cavity pressure can escape toward the lower-pressure side
Common for DBB applications
DPE – Double Piston Effect
Pressure energizes the seat from both directions
Provides bidirectional sealing
Important for DIB applications
Requires proper cavity pressure relief consideration
Typical configurations:
SPE + SPE → DBB
SPE + DPE → DIB-2
DPE + DPE → DIB-1
For critical pipeline applications, understanding the difference between DBB, DIB-1 and DIB-2 is essential for selecting the right ball valve and seat configuration.
